The original Porsche Panamera launched in 2009. It’s never been quite as controversial as the Cayenne SUV was, but like the Cayenne, it presented a uniquely Porsche take on the luxury saloon market, being among the best big four-seaters to drive, and of course having an image that few other brands can touch.

The Panamera hasn’t escaped depreciation though, which means there is significant money to be saved by picking up a pre-owned example. While we can’t quite say there’s a Panamera for every budget, you may be surprised how accessible some are, and a choice of engines, body styles, and options means there’s huge variety to the cars out there. Should you buy a Porsche Panamera?

It should come as no surprise that the Porsche Panamera is a great car. The German sports car manufacturer doesn’t tend to churn out disappointing vehicles, and while the Panamera has since been overshadowed slightly by the sleek electric Taycan, it’s still great to drive, has greater interior space than its electric sibling, and still drives as a Porsche should, despite its size and weight.

It’s available in both fastback and estate forms (the latter dubbed Sport Turismo), and while we’re concentrating on the regular car here, pretty much everything applies to the estate too. That means a choice of petrol and hybrid powertrains (pre Sport Turismo, diesel was also available), and the quickest models can give supercars a run for their money in a straight line.

The Panamera is great in the corners too. Most are all-wheel drive, for great traction, some have four-wheel steering to help with manoeuvrability, and all are well balanced, making them satisfying to thread along a country road. Being luxury cars, they’re also well suited to covering hundreds of miles on motorways too. Interior quality is among the best in the class too.

That class includes the likes of the BMW M5 and Audi RS6 and RS7, though look lower down the range and more conventional versions of the 5-Series, E-Class, Mercedes CLS, and the Audis are all potential alternatives too - while the Panamera’s prices both new and used overlap with big luxury limos like the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class, which prioritise space and comfort over the Porsche’s slightly more sporting focus.


What’s the best used Porsche Panamera model to buy?

The Panamera range is pretty talented across the board, and even the most mild-mannered versions have performance that wouldn’t have looked out of place on a 911 not so long ago. The GTS is probably a highlight of the range for keen drivers, getting a V8 engine but not the extra weight and complication of hybrid tech, and the standard sports exhaust gives it the best exhaust note of any Panamera too. Don’t discount the E-Hybrids, which get spectacular economy if you can regularly plug them in, but don’t discount the older diesel models either, which are still hard to beat for all-round economy.

  • Porsche Panamera: The entry-level Panamera makes 330PS from a 2.9-litre turbocharged V6, with rear-wheel drive and an 8-speed PDK automatic. That’s good for 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds, and 27.7mpg combined.
  • Porsche Panamera 4: You get an extra pair of driven wheels in the Panamera 4, but the same engine and gearbox. More traction makes for a quicker 0-62mph time of 5.3 seconds, and a small drop in economy at 27.2mpg.
  • Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid: Another 2.9-litre turbo model, electric assistance boosts power to 462PS and the 0-62mph time takes a corresponding drop, to 4.4 seconds. Economy is 141.2mpg, thanks to 35 miles of plug-in range.
  • Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid: Once again the combination of V6 power and electric assistance is at work, but output climbs to 560PS, and the 0-62mph time is a supercar-style 3.7 seconds. EV range is 33 miles, and combined economy is quoted at 128.4mpg.
  • Porsche Panamera GTS: The GTS is the first of the V8 models, using a 480PS twin-turbo petrol V8. It’ll sprint from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, and do 23.3 miles on every gallon of fuel.
  • Porsche Panamera Turbo S: Another V8, the Turbo S develops 630PS from four litres, and gets from 0-62mph in only 3.1 seconds. Combined economy is 22.1mpg.
  • Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid: The most potent Panamera makes 700PS from an electric-assisted V8. 0-62mph takes 3.2 seconds (it’s heavier than the Turbo S), but with 31 miles of EV range, combined economy is 104.6mpg.

Conveniently, Porsche’s trim levels all correspond to the engine and drivetrain of each trim line (or, if you like, engines and drivetrains correspond to trim levels). This means that generally speaking, the more powerful a Panamera is, the more kit you’ll get - though the original owner dabbling in Porsche’s extensive options list means that some cars may have quite different features to others.


  • The Porsche Panamera gets a set of 19-inch alloy wheels, Comfort-spec seats, a touchscreen media system, and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) using steel springs.
  • The Porsche Panamera 4 is visually identical to the regular Panamera and is offered with the same options packages too, along with PASM as standard fitment.
  • The Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid can be distinguished by ‘acid green’ brake calipers and exterior badging, while other equipment includes adaptive air suspension with (PASM), and the Sport Chrono package.
  • The Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid moves up to 20-inch wheels, and has the same acid green detailing as the 4 E-Hybrid.
  • The Porsche Panamera GTS gets a unique 20-inch alloy wheel design and GTS exterior badging, Sports Seats Plus, specific interior themes, and a sports exhaust system.
  • The Porsche Panamera Turbo S gets a larger set of 21 inch wheels, Comfort seats, adaptive air suspension with PASM, and ceramic brakes.
  • The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid comes with air suspension, PASM, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport, and detailing is once again in acid green.
